“She was a very special girl,” she said. For a second Holly expected that they both might grieve together, so she allowed herself to forget Nick’s role in her ongoing estrangement with Sandy Glass. The conversation suddenly shift ed.

“My biggest worry is that we had such a great sex life, and I just hope I don’t just blow it and have sex with someone I’m not supposed to. I don’t want to hurt any of the people around me.”

Is he flirting or confessing or just musing? Holly wasn’t sure. She knew she didn’t like what he was saying.

“Well, you better surround yourself with people that are really solid and really strong and have good marriages,” she said, stepping back.

Seeing her recoil, Nick backed off.

“I guess you’re right,” he said.
